A Barony in the Kingdom of An Tir which is
a Part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA, Inc)
What started in a backyard party with motorcycle helmets for helms and garbage can lids for shields has evolved into a wide variety and complexity of martial pursuits representing combat styles of the Middle Ages. All activities are subject to strict safety guidelines. It is the Marshall's primary duty to enforce these standards for the safety of both the fighters and the spectators. Therefore while bruises are common and even proudly displayed, serious injuries remain rare.
Persona development in the SCA concentrates on the noble classes. Members of this class (sometimes called the knightly classes) were responsible for the protection of their own lands and people from bandits and outside aggressors. The noble class usually owed military support to an overlord or other allies. This focus has made the martial arts perhaps the most visible part of our organization.

The Barony gained a warband at Last Chance. Huzzah and a Mighty Welcome to the Myrmidons!
From the Internet: NOVA ran a show on recreating a Frankish sword. It was very interesting and well worth a watch!
The Honorable Lord Ian writes:
Words are weak, but they are all I have, so I will make what use of them I can.
I have the knowledge of deeds that need to be spoken-of, and it is up to one such as I to do the speaking, because those that performed these deeds would not speak of it themselves, as what they did today they would see as merely what was expected, not by others, but by themselves, OF themselves, and that is the key to it all.
I had the pleasure of marshalling on the heavy field for today's champions tourney, and what I witnessed MADE it the pleasure it was, and an honor. That which I witnessed were repeated acts, by all the combatants, OF honor. Over and over, what were taken unhesitatingly as killing blows were called as not so by those that delivered them. They were called as "Tippy", "Flat", "Glancey", "Light", and any number of other descriptives. Had they not, none would have doubted their victory. Save for themselves. Clearly these lords and ladies weren't there solely to win the heavy championship, they were there to fight honorably for the sake OF doing so. I saw victory deferred or denied, repeatedly, by these fighters. Had they been there seeking the quick, easy road to victory, such would not have been the case, but by their actions they declared, over and over again, that honor was both their goal and their reward, and they would rather not win if they doubted in any way the validity of that win.
Dragons Laire, these are the heavy fighters that defend you, that fight for your honor. No wonder the word-fame of this barony grows. Even when victory is denied an individual, their honor is seen and spoken-of. It is these qualities, honor and chivalry, that were the foundation of our society, and seeing them repeatedly exemplified by all concerned today made the day one of pure pleasure.
Dragons Laire, you are blest indeed.
