About the Barony of Dragon's Laire

The Barony of Dragon's Laire is composed of Kitsap County and Northern Mason County in Washington State, USA. It is well known in the local community for our annual June Faire which open to the public. June Faire was once called Medieval Faire, the public may know it by that name still.

The members of our Barony come from a wide variety of backgrounds, interests and ages. However, we all share an interest in the histories and cultures of the Middle Ages and pursue that interest through the study of combat techniques, arts and crafts, social structures and dress of the period. This study starts and continues in the library or on-line but can quickly move to the forge, needle and tourney field for a real hands-on approach.

The Barony of Dragon's Laire is a branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Inc. It is part of the Kingdom of An Tir (Northwest U.S. and parts of Western Canada.) The SCA is a not-for-profit educational organization that studies the history and culture of the Middle Ages by recreating it. The SCA has branches all over the USA and Canada, as well as many parts of Europe, Australia, and Asia. To locate a branch near you check the SCA Web site.

Newcomers to the Barony, Meet our Chatelaine!

The Chatelaine (or Chatelain if the person is male) is in charge of welcoming newcomers to the Barony. She also organizes and oversees our small demonstrations (at schools and the like) and helps organize activities to make newcomers feel welcome and invited. The Chatelaine is a very important office for the Barony, and whoever holds the office works very hard indeed. Our current Chatelaine is THL Jess Dunn of the Roving Irishmen. You can reach her via email (see address in the sidebar) and at most events and fighter practices and socials.

Good afternoon mighty Barony,

Kingdom A&S brought many inquiries at Gate about who we were and why we were at the Casino. Many modern guests of the Casino enjoyed taking a peek into the competition rooms and seeing us in our garb. Many thanks to all those who posed for pictures for the public or answered their questions.

I received two emails from individuals who are interested in joining us. I've noticed a few new faces amongst the heavy and rapier fighters who I've not yet met. Thank you to the heavy and rapier communities for welcoming them and helping them get started.

With June Faire approaching it's time to start planning New Comer Night. Have an idea for something you'd like to see or a way to improve NCN? Let me know!

Speaking of June Faire, I'm hoping our heavy fighters can help me with some display items. I'd like to show our guests what a sword looks like when the rattan breaks down into broom like fibers. I'd also like a 12-18 inch piece of rattan to show what a sword looks like before it has any tape on it. If you have an extra helm, set of gauntlets, chainmail armor, shield, or other armor that you can lend for the day please let me know. I've helped BAO with a demo where they had these items and the public really enjoys seeing them up close.

As I have mentioned before, my tenure as Chatelaine has come to a close. If you are interested in taking over please let me, Renart, Ciar, or Their Excellencies know. I'd like to take my replacement on as a deputy for the summer and turn it over completely at Last Chance. This is one of the best jobs in the Barony as you get to share your passion for the SCA with people. Most of the work is behind the scenes replying to emails and arranging demos.

In Service,
THL Jess, Chatelaine
